International Women’s Day: A Reflection on Being a Woman Today
International Women’s Day often brings messages about strength, empowerment, and progress. These messages matter, and they reflect important changes that many women have fought hard for. Yet alongside these celebrations, there is also space for reflection about what it means to be a woman in today’s world.
For many women, modern life carries an unspoken tension. On one hand, there is the message that we can have it all. A fulfilling career, meaningful relationships, family life, personal growth, creativity, health, independence. On the other hand, the reality is that holding all of these roles at once can feel overwhelming. The idea of “having it all” can sometimes quietly turn into the pressure of “doing it all”.
Many women find themselves navigating expectations that come from many directions. Cultural expectations, family roles, workplace demands, social media comparisons, and internal standards we hold for ourselves. Trying to meet all of these expectations can leave little room to pause and ask a quieter question: what do I actually need?
Sometimes strength is not about holding everything together. Sometimes it is about letting go. Letting go of the idea that we must always be productive, always be nurturing, always be composed, always be achieving. Letting go can mean allowing ourselves to rest, to change direction, or to choose a life that looks different from the one we once imagined.
There is also something powerful in recognising that we are not navigating these questions alone. One of the most meaningful aspects of womanhood for many people is the sense of kinship that can exist between women. Not a perfect or idealised connection, but a shared understanding of certain experiences. Conversations where someone simply says, “I know what you mean”.
Support between women can take many forms. It might look like friendship, mentorship, shared laughter, honest conversations, or quiet understanding during difficult moments. Sometimes it is as simple as feeling seen and heard.
When women support each other, something shifts. The pressure to be perfect softens. Competition gives way to connection. There is space for compassion, both for others and for ourselves.
International Women’s Day can be a reminder not only of progress and advocacy, but also of the importance of care. Care for one another, and care for ourselves. In a world that often encourages constant striving, choosing support, love, and inner peace can be a quiet but meaningful act.
For some women, that may mean building strong communities. For others, it may mean setting boundaries, seeking help, or allowing themselves to slow down.
However it looks, there is value in creating lives that are not only full, but also sustainable and compassionate.
Today can be a moment to acknowledge the women around us, the support we give and receive, and the ongoing journey towards lives that feel balanced, connected, and at peace.
