Parent / Child Counselling
“Connection is the key to behaviour change.” - Dr Becky Kennedy
Parent and child counselling offers a supportive space for one parent and one child to attend sessions together. This service is available for children and young people of all ages, and focuses on strengthening the relationship between you, improving understanding, and supporting emotional wellbeing. Sessions are tailored to the child’s age and developmental stage, and always take place at a pace that feels safe and appropriate for both of you.
This type of counselling can be helpful when communication feels difficult, emotions feel overwhelming, or when something has disrupted the sense of connection between parent and child. It can also support families through change, challenge, or uncertainty. By working together, parent and child counselling aims to build trust, improve emotional understanding, and support healthier ways of relating, both within sessions and at home.
Parents and children often come to counselling for support with:
-
I help parents and children find safer and clearer ways to communicate, especially when conversations often end in frustration or misunderstanding. Sessions focus on improving listening, emotional expression, and mutual understanding.
-
When children experience strong or overwhelming emotions, counselling can help them feel understood and supported. I work with both parent and child to develop ways of recognising emotions, calming the body, and responding with greater confidence and care.
-
Behaviour is often a way for children to communicate unmet needs or difficult feelings. Counselling supports parents to better understand what may be driving behaviour and to respond in ways that feel supportive, consistent, and attuned.
-
Events such as separation, bereavement, illness, or family transitions can affect children deeply. I support families to talk openly about change, make sense of emotions, and strengthen feelings of safety and stability.
-
Counselling can help rebuild trust, closeness, and emotional connection. Sessions focus on helping both parent and child feel seen, valued, and emotionally supported within the relationship.
-
Starting school, changing schools, or managing academic or social pressures can be challenging for children and parents alike. Counselling provides space to explore worries, build resilience, and support emotional wellbeing.
-
Every child is unique. I support parents to better understand their child’s emotional world, including their sensitivities, strengths, and ways of coping, helping them respond with greater confidence and compassion.
-
Conflict and misunderstandings are part of family life, but repair is essential. Counselling helps parents and children work through ruptures, rebuild trust, and strengthen emotional safety after difficult moments.
-
I help children develop age-appropriate coping skills while supporting parents to reinforce these skills at home. The focus is on building emotional awareness, resilience, and a stronger sense of self.
If you feel that parent and child counselling could be helpful, you are welcome to get in touch to ask questions or explore whether this support feels right for your family. It takes awareness and care to recognise when extra support may be needed. You do not need to have everything worked out. Reaching out can be an important step towards greater understanding, connection, and emotional wellbeing for both you and your child.
